According to ESPN’s Chris Mortensen and published by Yahoo! Sports, “Utah defensive tackle Star Lotulelei, a projected Top 5 pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, will not be allowed to work out with the rest of the defensive lineman at the 2013 scouting combine after an echocardiogram revealed a heart condition that requires further medical testing.”
I have been thinking about this ever since I first saw the story on the news. The first thing I can say is thank goodness that the NFL provides these tests for their potential athletes, it likely saved his life.
I can only imagine how devastating it is for an athlete to be told that he has a condition that may prevent him from participating the sport that he loves. It is important for athletes to be tested as many of these conditions may not have symptoms until it is too late.
Lotulelei will undergo further medical testing before getting the OK to return to working out at his pro day.
