Extra Life | Meet Beaumont’s Gamers

extra_life

Some people raise money by holding bake sales. Some people raise money running marathons. And on one Saturday each fall, tens of thousands of gamers join together to raise money to save the lives of local kids by playing video games (anything from console games to tabletop RPG’s to even lawn sports). This is Extra Life.

Partnering with Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, players sign up and gather the support of their friends and family through tax-deductible donations to their specified local CMN Hospital. As the only CMN affiliated hospital in Southeast Michigan, we’re lucky to have a great group of players playing for Beaumont Children’s Hospital. Since 2008, Extra Life gamers have raised more than $4 million. This year, on November 2, we believe they’ll outdo themselves yet again.

Take a minute to learn about a few of the players playing for Beaumont Children’s Hospital. Click on each profile to learn more about each player including how they’re preparing for the 25-hour gaming marathon and what their favorite game of all time is. If you’d like to make a donation, click the Support Me button at the bottom of their page.

How did you hear about Extra Life and why did you decide to become involved?

I read about Extra Life online and, when I did, I knew it was worthwhile. As a child, I had more than a couple extended stays in the hospital for medical procedures. Those experiences had the potential to be upsetting, but, due to the care I was given, they weren’t. My memories of those events were largely positive. I think that all children should be afforded the opportunity to be properly cared for in as comforting an environment as possible.

Do you have any relationship with Beaumont Children’s Hospital or just playing for the closest CMN affiliate?

I don’t have a relationship with Beaumont Children’s Hospital directly, but I’m grateful for the work Beaumont does. My aunt was diagnosed with cancer a while back and, while she eventually lost her battle, Beaumont Health System was able to extend the time she had left and provide her the comfort and dignity to make that time as pleasant as possible. Additionally, the treatment they provide has ensured that my 93-year-old grandmother is healthy, happy and regularly beating me at Uno.

What is your favorite game of all time?

Team Fortress 2, by far. I’ve played it regularly since its release in 2007. Being assaulted by a mouthy Bostonian wielding a fish wrapped in newspaper is as entertaining as it is humiliating.

How did you hear about Extra Life and why did you decide to become involved?

I was a fan of Sarcastic Gamer way back in the day before getting into tech and games journalism, and heard about the initiative directly from the source. What triggered my involvement last year was the Extra Life presence at E3.

Do you have any relationship with Beaumont Children’s Hospital or just playing for the closest CMN affiliate?

My wife has had multiple family members receive excellent care there throughout the years, and though we’ve moved away from Michigan, we still wanted to support a hospital that had that kind of impact.

How will you be preparing for the 25-hour gaming marathon?

Good question! This year it’s 25 hours (an hour longer than previous years), so the stakes are even higher. I was thinking a caffeine I.V. drip. In all seriousness though, it’s the fans on the livestream, the constant encouragement from readers, and the donations coming in that provide the endurance and adrenalin to push through.

How did you hear about Extra Life and why did you decide to become involved?

I came across Extra Life through my gaming clan. They had a team together already. I went to the site and started reading about it and thought it was one of the coolest charities I’ve ever seen! I wanted to get involved because not only did it involve one of my favorite passions but also, I would be doing my part to help sick children.

Do you have any relationship with Beaumont Children’s Hospital or just playing for the closest CMN affiliate?

I just recently started volunteering at Beaumont Hospital in Troy so I figured I’d do one for the Beaumont team and help with their company.

Are you a pretty active gamer? What is your favorite system? Games?

I would say I play about 4 – 5 days a week. That seems pretty active to me! My favorite system to play on is XBox 360 with PC in a close second. I’m typically one to play first person shooter games like Call Of Duty, but I enjoy Minecraft and I also play the occasional World of Warcraft quest here and there.

I am, yes. I play mainly PC games and tend to favor games I can play with friends. Team Fortress 2 is my most frequently played game. Borderlands 2, Hammerwatch and GTA V have gotten some time recently, too.
